MS lesbian prom flap vs. catholic charities' spousal benefits decision

From the UP: Lesbian student alleges high school canceled this year’s prom after she asked if she could bring her girlfriend, wear a tux

If this is indeed what happened here–and it looks like it is–that’s pretty damned distressing.

Compare with Catholic Charities’ decision to remove spousal benefits in the DC area now that same-sex marriage is legal there (WaPo). The general slant of things seems to be that if homophobes have to treat everybody equally (check out the ACLU pressure on the school district in the first story), they will treat everyone equally shittily rather than equally fairly.

It’s legal, near as I know. But it still isn’t fair. And it reeks of desperation.

I’d like to think that all the kids who are getting their prom taken away from them (and all the married couples that work for Catholic Charities who are suddenly getting no benefits) will take this as an opportunity to realize how silly and petty this kind of discrimination is, but I don’t know that I’m holding my breath.
